K9 Wholistic Canine Complete Reviews

We have great respect for the folks over at K9 Supplements and we were happy to include their Wholistic Canine Complete supplement to our list of reviewed products. We decided to try their powdered "complete" product which was billed as their all-in-one solution. The manufacturer of this product is very good at marketing and leading their customers to believe they have the best available formulas.

They claim their wholistic canine complete is organic, using human-grade ingredients that provides your pet with a complete array of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, essential fatty acids, powerful antioxidants and digestive microflora! We are told that high bioavailability is ensured by the use of Organic, Human-Grade Whole-Food sources as opposed to artificial, synthetic ingredients (silly statement). They say if you are tired of using several different supplements in the never-ending quest for optimum nutrition for your pet,  then you no longer need to look elsewhere. The biggest claim is that Wholistic Canine Complete offers all required nutrients in a whole-food form that is easily and readily digestable, but it offers the highest quality of premium nutrients that are human-grade and certified organic!

Well that certainly is a lot to live up to so we knew we had our work cut out for us with this product. When we received the product we were disappointed that it was in powder form which is simply a cheaper process for the manufacturer. This was confirmed by the packaging which is nothing more than a sticker on a standup pouch. Whenever we see this approach to manufacturing and packaging we are concerned that it could be a garage operation in disguise. Since we knew this was not the case with K9, it was just disappointing they took such a cheap approach.

Another problem with powdered products is that consumers have a hard time choosing based on value. When you buy by weight and give to your dog by volume it can be difficult to make comparisons to simpler wafer dosages. The mixture appeared to be even, although the odor was unpleasant and we were worried about how it would be received by our dogs. It performed better than most powders but only 50% of our reviewers reported their dogs would eat it.

Since this product is billed as a "complete" product, a lot of focus is paid to the ingredients. The use of the words "certified organic" was a concern. We scoured their website for any proof of this certification and could find nothing. We actually lost a lot of respect for the people at K9 by the use of this marketing tactic. if you advertise something as organic as much as they do on their website, you have to make sure you can back it up. When there is no actual certification information listed, one would suspect it isn't even true.

The organic issue aside, there are some good ingredients in this product. Kelp and flaxseed have been proven to be very helpful in canine nutrition. The use of hydrolyzed whitefish is peculiar. This is a degraded form of protein used to provide a non-allergenic source of protein for dogs with extreme allergies. The assumption for canine supplementation is that their basic needs of protein, fat, and fiber are being met. The use of a protein supplement can drive many breeds into a danger area of getting too much protein in their diet which can lead to the devleopment of kidney stones.

The rest of the ingredients are a mixture of normal vitamins and amino acids which are a good start but by no means everything a dog needs in a supplement. We asked ourselves where the antioxidants and trace minerals are. How about the needed Omegas and something for joint health? Nothing in this product but a very basic group of overbilled ingredients and a lazy manufacturing process with simple packaging.

Overall Assessment

While we were very excited about looking at the complete supplement from K9, we walked away very disappointed. What makes it worse is that their marketing is so over the top you wonder how their products can be anything but perfect. This was a tremendous let down that we suspect is felt by many of their customers. We hope they go back to the drawing board and make a true complete supplement that is in a wafer with grown up packaging. Until then, we will use the proven products.
